Whale Oil Beef Hooked! A very interesting and clear piece thanks Piers. I doubt many of us would have noticed without the heads up. Not with my ageing eyesight anyway….

The original font didn't so much have a problem with *kerning* (gaps between letters) IMHO but the font itself is quite unusual in having such a long tail / descender on the letter R - I think this type of design is know as "spur" serif. To be honest, the whole font is rather interesting - deep crotch on the M, splayed legs and serif. Stepped middle legs on the W. What font did you think it was? Rawlinson?

If you examine the gaps between the other letters, you'll see that the kerning is about as tight as possible without touching... in fact, the kerning could be argued to be too tight between the N and the T. The new font, for me at least, provides for a slightly more balanced logo.

Anyway. Enough serif-geekery. When can I get my hands on a World Timer?
